As seasonal fluctuations impact our bodies, it's important to stay hydrated. Drinking water is essential and you also need electrolytes to stay fresh and energized. I use LMNT Electrolyte Drink Mix in a pinch but you can also make a hydrating drink with ingredients in your kitchen.

I’m excited to share this wonderful Ayurvedic Rehydration Drink, which helps you maintain balance and nourish your body in any season. Chef Divya Alter, an expert in Ayurvedic cooking and a regular guest on my podcast, generously shared this recipe.

I love this recipe. I make it most often during the summer because it’s so refreshing, but it works its magic any time of the year.

6 Healing Ingredients Unlock Hydration

Before we dive into the recipe, let's take a moment to understand Ayurveda, India’s ancient system of medicine and holistic wellness. Remedies in Ayurveda focus on achieving balance in the body, mind, and spirit.

Each ingredient in this recipe plays a unique role in restoring balance and harmony to your body, regardless of the season.

  • Cumin Seeds: These seeds not only add a delightful smoky flavor but also aid digestion and help maintain balance.

  • Lime Juice: Packed with vitamin C, lime juice not only adds a zesty kick but also boosts your immune system.

  • Mint or Basil: These herbs provide a refreshing aroma and help soothe the digestive system.

  • Raw Sugar: A touch of sweetness balances the flavors and provides quick energy.

  • Soma Salt: Soma salt is considered a balancing element in Ayurveda, perfect for maintaining equilibrium year-round.

  • Nutmeg (Optional): Nutmeg brings a comforting note to the drink, complementing the other balancing ingredients.

Ayurvedic Rehydration Drink

Ingredients

  • 1/8 tsp. cumin seeds

  • 2 cups spring water

  • 1 tbsp. fresh lime juice

  • 2 tsp. fresh mint or basil (chopped)

  • 1 tsp. raw sugar

  • 2 small pinches of soma salt

  • Optional: 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg

Preparation

  1. Toast and crush the cumin seeds: Begin by dry-toasting the cumin seeds in a pan over medium-low heat for about 1 minute or until they release their fragrant aroma. This toasting process enhances the flavor and therapeutic qualities of the seeds. Once done, remove them from heat, allow them to cool, and then gently crush them using a mortar and pestle.

  2. Blend the ingredients: In a blender, combine and then blend the cumin seeds with spring water, fresh lime juice, mint or basil, raw sugar, and soma salt. If you choose to add nutmeg, add it to the blender too.

  1. Strain and serve: To achieve a smooth and refreshing texture, strain the blended mixture through a cheesecloth or a nut milk bag into a clean container. This step ensures that you get a clear and pure liquid.

Whether you're embracing the changing seasons, staying active outdoors, or simply nourishing your body and soul, this refreshing drink will keep you in harmony with the principles of Ayurveda.

Cheers to health, hydration, and the wisdom of Ayurveda!

Be well,
