10 Ways to Embrace Spring's Fresh Energy
Spring is Kapha season—a time of moisture, heaviness, and potential stagnation. But nature, in her wisdom, gives us the perfect antidote: movement, lightness, and growth.
Each spring, I shift my routines with the season—moving my body, refreshing my space, and spending time outdoors. My team and I gathered our favorite ways to celebrate spring’s fresh energy. Whether you love to tend your garden or simply enjoy tea outdoors, we hope these ideas help you feel more alive.
Soak up the sun.
My favorite time to get outside is the morning. Just 10 minutes of morning sun a day resets your internal clock and promotes deep sleep. Remember to protect your skin with sunscreen or light-blocking clothing when you’re out for a long time!
Sunbathe like a cat.
I love the feeling of warm sun on my closed eyelids. I’m quite pale, so I cover up and wear sunscreen when I do this. It’s such a simple pleasure. I listen to the birds, sounds of the neighborhood, and sometimes music. Taking those quiet breaths under the sky makes me feel more like myself. (Ruth)
Read outside with tea.
Even when it’s still a bit chilly, I wrap myself in a coat, make a cup of tea, and head out to the patio with my e-reader. It’s the kind of nourishing moment that balances the heaviness of spring Kapha. (Avanti)
Reconnect with nature.
Whether it’s the sun on your face or spotting the first spring blooms, nature reminds us that we’re part of something bigger. Step outside and let the season wake something up in you.
Walk in the woods.
Living near a forest preserve is one of my greatest gifts. It’s the easiest way to reconnect—just a walk and some good music or a quiet moment with the trees. I often listen to The Healing Catalyst podcast while I walk. (Jackie)
Visit botanical gardens.
I always try to visit the Chicago Botanic Garden in spring. The colors, the quiet, the sense of renewal—it’s healing in a way that words can’t quite describe. (Avanti)
Seek blooming beauty.
Every spring, I walk around just looking at the buds on trees and shoots in garden beds. My grandmother, a master gardener, had me digging in gardens at a young age. This year, I’m anticipating the lilacs planted by the previous owner of my house. (Ruth)
Plant a garden.
There’s something about getting your hands in the dirt that feels deeply healing. I’m planting tomatoes, cilantro, jalapeños, and flowers this spring. Every sprout is a little victory. (Jackie)
Spark your creativity.
Let spring stir your imagination. Whether you're doodling with chalk, gliding on a longboard, or wandering through art and memory, this season is full of ways to play, create, and be inspired.
Draw on a sidewalk.
One of my favorite purchases is sidewalk chalk. I love to do little doodles or messages for the people in my house. I try not to make “good art” and just let myself play. I love the impermanence of it too–everything disappears in the next rain. (Ruth)
Visit an art museum.
The Modern Wing of the Art Institute is full of light and inspiration. I was an art history major, so wandering there brings back memories—and awakens creativity for the season ahead. (Avanti)
Hop on a longboard.
When the pavement is dry and the sun is out, it’s time to skate. I throw on my Vans, grab my board, and cruise. It’s movement, balance, and fun—all rolled into one. (Jackie)
Wander your favorite spots.
I often walk through Hyde Park, where I went to college. I grab coffee, browse bookstores, and take in the beauty of the familiar. It’s my favorite kind of springtime nostalgia. (Avanti)
